MSL - "Music as a Second Language"

Imagine hearing another language, yet not being able to understand it. Again, imagine understanding the language, yet not fully. Finally, imagine hearing the language and being able to comprehend it. The point is, you know that it's a language being spoken whether or not you do or don't understand it fully. In the way that it's spoken, whether it's whispered, shouted, or conveyed with such calmness to it, you know that there's more than just the sound to it.

Musically speaking, notes can be compared to words. Understanding their meanings can lead to becoming fluent with this kind of language also. Key factors are the various ranges of sounds from high to low, the ability to play just the right sound and whether it be a low, mid, or a high range of notes...

Jocelle Cruz Musick can best be described and defined through this perspective. His music became musick the moment that He "spiritually-understood" that the power of it lies behind the abilty to comprehend the meaning of every note and to combine it with other notes, thereby allowing the feelings straight from his heart & soul to be manifested through the sounds.

His method of singing evolved from imitating the sounds that he heard from his tuned guitar, from the tapping of it's body, as well as plucking of the strings. Generally, this method can be referred to as "scatting". Through countless hours and years of playing and scatting, he's come to the point of being "locked" in to the sound of every note of the guitar. Hence comes the ability to speak from his heart & soul, and with the sound comes the manifestation of those feelings, whether it be feelings of sadness or joy that he's feeling within. No doubt that those who are present to hear the sounds of His music are sure to feel it also.

His lack of formal training in music became a "blessing in disguise". Not having the full understanding when people compliment his music and compare his sound to "those" of famous musicians is a true representation of his perspective. It is likened to a person climbing a ladder that seems never ending, climbing one step at a time. While climbing, there's the voices of people shouting how high and how far the person has gotten, but having never looked down, the person himself doesn't realize how far and how high he's gotten.

Jocelle found himself in the position of being a full time musician, working from five to ten hours a day. He soon came to the realization that his way of singing and always giving everything that he's got, had proved to be physically draining. Again, this awareness became another "blessing in disguise". He soon found a way that would allow him to take a breather. Playing his harmonicas became a way to relieve him from singing, while allowing him to continue on with the musick that he so loved. Leaning more towards the minors as opposed to majors allowed the sound of his music to truly begin to take shape and added fullness. Wanting to make the sounds of the guitar even fuller, he found his loop station to be of great use.

This was such an asset towards capturing the powerful sounds of his guitar rhythms that have so often moved anyone within hearing range. He brings together the sounds of the melodies of the notes that are dictated by his feelings, as they come straight from his heart and soul. This allows him to play anything that sounds gratifying, and to go back and forth from playing the rhythm, melodies, as well the harmonicas while also scatting. As complicated as it is to try to define his music, this is probably the simplest way that it can be explained. In a way, this is Jocelle Cruz Musick. You may not be able to relate to his musick with words, but you will surely come to understand the language of it once you've heard and felt it.

JOCELLE CRUZ MUSICK is a style and type of music that is both original and mystifying. It is the type of music whose sound produces an immense power and energy which are the direct manifestations of what is deeply felt from the musicians' heart and soul; the type of music that has both crossed over and continues to transcend over many boundaries and limitations; the type of music that was played back when music was musick and was free.
